Puri Asu Resort is a small surf resort on Asu, one of the Hinako Islands off the west coast of Nias in North Sumatra. Its main wave is Asu, a long, fast left-hander about five minutes away by boat, and unlimited boat transfers to the surf are part of every stay. Other breaks within reach include Bawa, a powerful deep-water right for experienced and big-wave surfers, Bombie, a short right that works on east winds, a longer reef right known as Secret Rights, and Afulu on Nias itself, 40 to 50 minutes away.
The resort takes a maximum of 15 surfers and 6 non-surfers. Standard accommodation is a large wooden house with four twin rooms and shared bathrooms; Superior rooms are private ocean-view bungalows with a king bed, private bathroom, board rack and veranda. All rooms have air conditioning and hot water. Meals are a mix of Indonesian and Western food, and stand-up paddleboards, snorkelling and fishing gear and a yoga gazebo are available to guests.
This is a resort for surfers who can already handle reef breaks: it does not run a surf school or rent boards, so bring your own quiver. Agents list 2026 rates (April to October) from USD 200 per person per night for Standard and USD 280 for Superior, with non-surfing companions at USD 100. Return transfers from Binaka airport (a two-hour drive to Sirombu harbour, then about 30 minutes by speedboat) cost extra, and there are no shops or ATMs on the island. The main season runs from about March or April to November, with the biggest swells and offshore winds from July to September.
Bookings are taken through the resort's website and surf travel agents such as Surf Camp Sumatra and Perfect Wave; check current rates and transfer costs before you pay.
