Bali Ocean Surf

Bali Ocean Surf is a French surf school based on Jalan Arjuna in Legian, on the long sandy beach that runs north from Kuta. Its instructors hold ISA (International Surfing Association) and French BPJEPS qualifications, and the school says its rates have stayed the same since 2011. Most lessons take place on the beach at Legian, which suits beginners and intermediates, and during the wet season from December to March the school moves sessions to the Nusa Dua area when conditions are better there.

Lessons are semi-private, with one instructor for a maximum of three people, and last two hours, about an hour and a half of which is spent in the water, with a warm-up, theory, a mid-session break for feedback and a debrief. The price includes surf insurance, a full set of equipment (board, rash guard, UV leggings, sunscreen and a surf helmet if wanted) and free return transport from hotels in Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu, Sanur, Nusa Dua, Denpasar and the Bukit. Families can surf together, with a minimum age of eight on the standard programmes.

The school sells multi-session programmes rather than single lessons, including a beginner-to-intermediate Sensation course, plus custom coaching for more experienced surfers and a six-day, five-night surf camp that combines partner-hotel accommodation, breakfast, a daily session, transport and photos. Group discounts of up to 25% and an early-booking discount are available.
