Kuta is where surfing in Bali began, and its long sandy beach is still one of the best places on the island for a first lesson. The waves break over sand rather than reef, the bottom shelves gently, and on most days there is a soft inside section where beginners can practise standing up. Kuta Beach runs north into Legian, so schools spread out along several kilometres and crowding is easier to avoid than the beachfront suggests.
The best conditions come in the dry season from April to October, when south-east trade winds blow offshore and south-west swell arrives regularly. Mornings are usually cleanest before the afternoon sea breeze. In the wet season from November to March, westerly winds make the beach choppy later in the day, though lessons still run most mornings. Lifeguards patrol the beach and flags mark safer swimming and surfing zones, which is worth respecting when rip currents form on bigger days.
Kuta is about 15 minutes from Ngurah Rai Airport, making it an easy first stop. Experienced surfers can take a boat from the beach to the Airport Reefs, including Kuta Reef, a left that works well in the dry season, and the lefts and rights off the runway. The area suits first timers, families and anyone wanting cheap accommodation and nightlife close to the water.
