Canggu, on Bali's south-west coast north of Seminyak, has grown from rice fields and a few surf homestays into the island's busiest surf town. It has a mix of reef and sand breaks along a short stretch of coast, which makes it a good place for surfers moving on from their first lessons as well as complete beginners.
Batu Bolong is the main teaching beach, a slow, crumbly wave over a mix of sand and rock that suits longboards and learners. Old Man's, next door, is similar but with more peaks. Echo Beach (Batu Mejan) is a faster, more powerful reef wave for experienced surfers, best at mid to high tide. To the north, Pererenan and Berawa offer further peaks that can be less crowded. The best season is April to October, when south-east trade winds blow offshore and swell is consistent. In the wet season from November to March, mornings are often still surfable before westerly winds pick up.
Canggu is roughly 45 minutes to 90 minutes by road from Ngurah Rai Airport depending on traffic, which can be heavy. Most people get around by scooter or ride hailing apps, and boards can be rented directly on the beach at Batu Bolong. The town suits beginners and improvers who want a social scene, cafés, coworking spaces and yoga alongside their surfing. Browse the surf schools, camps and coaching outfits listed in Canggu below.
