Medewi is a small village in the Jembrana regency of West Bali, known for one wave: a long left-hand point that breaks over a boulder and cobblestone bottom at the mouth of a river. On a good day, rides of a couple of hundred metres are possible, and the wave is gentle enough for confident beginners on small days and fun for intermediate surfers and longboarders.
The best season is the dry season from April to October, when consistent south-west swell meets south-east trade winds. The wave is cleanest in the early morning, before the afternoon breeze picks up. Medewi needs a moderate swell to work well and holds a bit more size than the beach breaks to the south. Nearby, Balian is a river mouth with lefts and rights that offers a second option within half an hour, and further west the coast is lightly surfed.
Medewi is about three hours by road from Ngurah Rai Airport, so most visitors stay locally in guesthouses and small surf camps rather than making a day trip. The village has a quiet, rural feel, with rice fields running down towards the coast and few distractions after dark. It suits surfers who want to escape the crowds of Canggu and the Bukit and spend a week surfing one consistent wave. Browse the surf camps and schools in Medewi below.
