The Bukit Peninsula, at the southern tip of Bali, is a limestone headland ringed by reef breaks. It is the island's best known area for experienced surfers, and the waves here are generally fast, hollow and shallow. Most spots are reached down steep steps or cliff paths, and many have warungs perched above the line-up.
Uluwatu itself is a long left with several sections, including The Peak, Racetrack and Outside Corner, accessed through a cave at the base of the cliff. Padang Padang is a short, powerful barrelling left that needs a solid swell. Bingin, Impossibles, Dreamland and Balangan run along the west side of the Bukit, offering a range of lefts that suit intermediate to advanced surfers depending on size and tide. The prime season is the dry season from April to October, when the south-east trades blow offshore. In the wet season the west side is often onshore, and surfers move to Nusa Dua and the east side of the peninsula.
The Bukit is around 30 to 60 minutes from Ngurah Rai Airport. Beginners can still learn here, as several schools take students to Dreamland or Balangan on small days, or drive to Kuta, but the area is best for surfers who are already comfortable on a reef. Bring reef boots or take care at low tide. The listings below include surf camps, coaching operators and surf resorts across Uluwatu and the wider Bukit.
