Surf Go Where

Sanur

Sanur, on Bali's south-east coast, is a calm resort town known for its long beachfront path and family hotels. Its surf breaks over the outer edge of the reef that shelters the lagoon, so the waves here are a paddle or a short boat ride out, and they are generally for intermediate and experienced surfers rather than first timers. Sanur works on the opposite season to most of Bali. From November to March, the wet season north-west and west winds blow offshore on the east coast, and swells wrap in to Sanur Reef, Hyatt Reef and Tandjung Sari. Nearby Keramas, around 30 minutes up the coast, is a powerful right-hander over reef that has hosted international competitions, and Nusa Dua to the south also works in the wet season. In the dry season Sanur can be flat or onshore, so local schools usually drive students to the west coast. Sanur is about 30 minutes from Ngurah Rai Airport and is also the main departure point for fast boats to Nusa Lembongan, which has its own reef breaks such as Shipwrecks, Lacerations and Playgrounds. The town suits surfers travelling with family, those who want a quieter base, and anyone planning a wet season trip. The listings below include surf schools, guides and boat operators based in Sanur.
