Umar Surf Coach

Umar Surf Coach is a small coaching outfit run by three local brothers: Umar and his older brother Aby coach in Medewi and around West Bali, while younger brother Lana is based in Uluwatu, where he also coaches at a surf camp. Medewi's long, mellow left-hand point is one of the best waves in Bali for learning to trim and building confidence, and the team picks sessions around the tide and conditions on the day.

Every lesson lasts two hours and includes a board, rash vest, water, safety briefing and theory. Semi-private lessons start at IDR 350,000 per person and a one-to-one session costs IDR 450,000, with packages of five private sessions for IDR 2.1 million and ten for IDR 4 million, the latter including a video analysis session. Family lessons are also available, and coaching is offered for beginners right through to intermediate and advanced surfers stepping down to shorter boards.

Beyond lessons, the team rents boards from IDR 70,000, from beginner soft-tops to performance shortboards, offers surf photography and video, runs guided surf trips to G-Land, Sumbawa and elsewhere in Indonesia, and has a local homestay two minutes' walk from the beach.
