Nuna Surf is a locally owned surf camp in Kuta, south Lombok, within easy reach of Tanjung Aan, Gerupuk and Selong Belanak. It was founded in Bali in 2017 by a young Indonesian surfer who had worked at surf camps across the island, with the aim of building a surf camp owned by locals; it puts 2.5% of its income towards training, equipment and mentoring for talented local children who want to surf professionally.
Coaching is kept small, with one ISA-certified local coach for every two surfers, and coaches assess your level on the first day before choosing a spot to suit the tide, wind and swell. The surf school runs beginner, intermediate, advanced and longboard programmes, with surf theory, pool sessions and daily video and photo feedback; beginner lessons are published from IDR 600,000 a session. Soft-top boards are used for beginners and hardboards, mid-lengths, shortboards and longboards for more experienced surfers.
The surf camp packages run for 3, 5 or 7 nights and include daily coaching, all surf equipment, theory classes, accommodation and breakfast, plus extras such as yoga, surf-skate and mobility sessions, an ice bath and sauna, a Lombok culture trip and BBQ and jam nights. Rooms range from mixed and female dorms to a traditional rumah lumbung and deluxe rooms, with wifi, air conditioning and hot showers, and airport pick-up is about 25 to 30 minutes away. Nuna also runs surf trips to Sumbawa and the Mentawai Islands and a sister school in Bali. Book through the website or WhatsApp.
