Kuta Lombok

Kuta, on Lombok's south coast, is the island's main surf town and the base for most surf schools and camps. Not to be confused with Kuta in Bali, it is a smaller and quieter place, set in a bay of white sand with hills on either side. The new Mandalika resort area and its MotoGP circuit sit just east of town, and the town has grown in recent years, but it still has a relaxed feel. The beach in front of town is mostly sheltered, so surfers travel out to nearby breaks each day. To the west is Selong Belanak, the main beginner beach, and Mawi, a powerful reef break for experienced surfers. To the east is Gerupuk Bay, with several breaks reached by local boat, and further on Ekas. Kuta's own reefs, the Outside Left and Outside Right, are reached by boat from the town beach. The main season is April to October, when swells are reliable and the dry season trades blow. Early starts give the best conditions. Kuta is about 30 minutes by road from Lombok International Airport. Scooter hire is common, and most surf schools include transport and boat fees in their packages. The town suits beginners through to experienced surfers who want a single base with access to many breaks and a choice of accommodation from simple homestays to boutique hotels.
