Gerupuk is a fishing village on a large bay about 15 minutes' drive east of Kuta on Lombok's south coast. The bay contains several surf breaks, all reached by small local boats from the village jetty, and the range of waves makes it one of the best places in the region for surfers progressing from whitewater to green waves.
Inside Gerupuk (sometimes called Gerupuk Inside) is a soft wave over reef that suits beginners and longboarders. Outside Gerupuk is a larger right that breaks further out and suits intermediate surfers. Don Don, deeper in the bay, offers lefts and rights on bigger swells, and Kid's Point is a left that works across a range of tides. Because the breaks are spread across the bay, crowds thin out as conditions change through the day. The best season is April to October, when swells are consistent and the bay offers some shelter from the trade winds. Boat fares are paid per trip and include waiting time.
Gerupuk is quieter than Kuta, with a handful of homestays and surf camps in the village itself. Many surfers stay in Kuta and hire a boat for the day, while others base themselves in Gerupuk to be first out in the morning. The village suits improvers and intermediate surfers who want coaching on a variety of reef waves. Browse the surf schools and camps operating in Gerupuk below.
