Selong Belanak

Selong Belanak is a long, curved bay of soft white sand about 30 minutes' drive west of Kuta on Lombok's south coast. It is the most popular beginner beach on the island, with gentle, rolling waves over sand that break consistently through much of the year. Unlike many breaks in the region, there is no reef underfoot, which makes it a safe place to take a first lesson. The waves here are smaller than at the exposed reefs, as the headlands either side shelter the bay. That makes Selong Belanak a good choice for families, children and first timers, and also a good fallback when bigger swells make other breaks too powerful. The best time is the dry season from April to October, when swell is consistent and mornings are often clean. Lessons usually run in the morning and late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and sea breeze. Boards can be rented on the beach. Most surf schools in Kuta bring students to Selong Belanak by car or scooter, and there are a few small resorts and villas around the bay itself. The road from Kuta passes Mawun beach and has some steep sections, so take care on a scooter. The bay suits complete beginners, those wanting a gentle refresher and anyone looking for a quieter base on the south-west coast. Browse the surf schools and stays near Selong Belanak below.
