Black Fin Surf School is a small, locally run surf school on Selong Belanak Beach in south-west Lombok. It is led by head instructor Sandi, who grew up in Selong Belanak and has been teaching surfing for more than fifteen years, with a small team of local instructors. The bay's sandy bottom and long, gentle whitewater make it one of the easiest places on Lombok to learn, and complete beginners start with the basics on the beach before heading into the water with their instructor.
Most lessons are one-to-one, and small-group sessions are also available. Published prices are IDR 250,000 for a one-hour private lesson and IDR 350,000 for two hours, including the surfboard, a rash shirt or wetsuit and a water break. Ask by WhatsApp about group rates, multi-lesson discounts and surf trips.
Improving and experienced surfers can work on technique at Selong Belanak or take a short guided boat trip to Serangan, a good wave for intermediates, or to the more powerful reef at Mawi when conditions and ability allow. The school does not provide transport, so students make their own way by scooter or driver: Selong Belanak is about 35 minutes from Kuta Lombok and 30 minutes from the airport. Book by WhatsApp with your preferred date and how much surfing you have done.
