Surf Go Where

Lombok

Lombok sits east of Bali across the Lombok Strait and offers similar swell with far fewer people in the water. Its surf is concentrated along the south coast, around the town of Kuta (now part of the Mandalika development), and at Desert Point in the island's far south-west, one of the best known left-hand reef waves in Indonesia. The main season is the dry season from April to October, when south-west swells are consistent and south-east trade winds blow. Mornings tend to be the cleanest time of day. From December to February, the wet season brings smaller, less reliable swell and more onshore days, though there are still waves at times. Desert Point needs a large swell and is most reliable in the middle of the dry season. Lombok International Airport near Praya is about 30 minutes from Kuta, with flights from Bali, Jakarta, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Fast boats also link Bali and the Gili Islands. Around Kuta, beginners usually learn at Selong Belanak, a long sandy bay to the west, while improvers take boats out to the breaks in Gerupuk Bay to the east. Experienced surfers can explore reef breaks such as Mawi, Ekas and Kuta's Outside Left and Right. Pick an area below to compare surf schools, camps and boat operators.
