The Mentawai Islands lie about 100 to 150 kilometres off the west coast of Sumatra and are one of the most consistent surf regions in the world. The chain, including Siberut, Sipora and the North and South Pagai islands, is exposed to Southern Indian Ocean swell almost all year, and its reefs produce a remarkable number of high quality waves.
Well known breaks include Macaronis, a fast, mechanical left; Lance's Right (HT's) on Sipora, a hollow right-hand reef; Lance's Left, Bank Vaults, Telescopes, Rifles and Kandui, among many others. Most waves break over shallow reef and are best for intermediate to advanced surfers, though some resorts offer coaching and gentler waves for improvers. The main season runs from April to October, when swells are biggest and most reliable, with peak months in the middle of the year. The shoulder months either side often bring smaller swells, lighter winds and fewer boats.
Access is from Padang in West Sumatra, which has flights from Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur and other hubs. From there, the public fast ferry runs to Tua Pejat on Sipora and to Siberut, or surfers join a liveaboard charter or a resort transfer. Surfers choose between land-based resorts near specific breaks and boat charters that move with the swell. Consider travel insurance that covers remote locations.
