Sumbawa is the large island east of Lombok, and it has two distinct surf regions with different characters. In the east, Lakey Peak near the town of Hu'u in Dompu regency is a cluster of reef breaks around a single bay. In the west, a string of reefs around Jelenga and Maluk, known collectively as West Sumbawa, includes some of the heaviest waves in the region.
Lakey Peak is an A-frame reef offering both lefts and rights, while nearby Lakey Pipe is a hollow left, and Periscopes, Nungas and Cobblestones work on different swells and tides. These are mainly for intermediate and experienced surfers. In West Sumbawa, Scar Reef is a powerful left, Yo-Yo's is a right-hand reef, and Supersuck is a fast, shallow left that needs a big swell. The season for both areas is the dry season from May to October, when trade winds blow offshore and swell is consistent. July and August are the windiest months at Lakey, which also makes it popular for kitesurfing.
Lakey Peak is reached by flying to Bima, around two to three hours away by road. West Sumbawa is reached by flying to Sumbawa Besar or taking the ferry from Kayangan on Lombok to Poto Tano, then driving south. Accommodation is mainly in surf camps and simple bungalows. Sumbawa suits experienced surfers looking for quality reef waves with smaller crowds than Bali. Browse the surf camps and charters in Sumbawa below.
