Hiri Surf School operates directly on the sand at Hiriketiya, the horseshoe-shaped bay near Dikwella whose sandy inside section is one of the gentlest places on the south coast to learn. The school was founded by local instructor Kasun, who leads a team of more than 15 coaches trained by the International Surfing Association and in ocean rescue and CPR.
Group lessons last 1 hour 15 minutes and cost 5,000 LKR per person, with semi-private lessons for two at 6,000 LKR each and one-to-one lessons at 8,000 LKR. All include a soft-top board, leash and UV rash guard, with beach theory and ocean safety. There are one-hour lessons for children aged 5 to 12 in waist-deep water, plus multi-day courses of one, three and five days that build from pop-ups to paddling out and wave selection. Guided surf trips to other breaks are also offered.
Hiriketiya is at its best during the south coast season from about November to April. The school suits complete beginners, couples, families with children and improvers looking for patient, safety-focused coaching. It does not offer accommodation, but the bay is lined with guesthouses and cafes.
