Surf Go Where

South Coast

Sri Lanka's south coast stretches from Galle to Tangalle and offers the widest range of surf in the country, from gentle sandy beaches to reef and point breaks. Most surf schools and camps are based in a handful of towns within a short drive of each other, which makes it easy to change breaks as conditions shift. Weligama has a long sandy bay with soft waves, ideal for first lessons. Midigama, a little further west, has reef breaks including Lazy Left, Lazy Right and Ram's, which suit improvers and intermediate surfers. Ahangama has several reefs and points, and Kabalana nearby is a powerful peak for experienced surfers. In the east, Hiriketiya is a small horseshoe bay with a gentle beach break and a left-hand reef along one side. Mirissa, between Weligama and Hiriketiya, also has a right-hand reef. The season runs from about November to April, when the north-east monsoon blows offshore on the south coast and swell from the south-west is consistent. December to March are usually the best months. The south coast is about two and a half to three hours by road from Bandaranaike International Airport via the Southern Expressway. The trains and buses along the coast are an option for those travelling light. The area suits beginners and intermediate surfers who want plenty of choice, a lively café scene and good-value accommodation. Browse the surf schools, camps and retreats across the south coast below.
