Surf Go Where

Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is a small town on Sri Lanka's east coast, close to Pottuvil, and the country's best known surf destination. Its main break, simply called Main Point or Arugam Bay Point, is a long right-hand point break that peels along the southern end of the bay and has hosted international competitions. Main Point suits intermediate and experienced surfers, as it can be crowded and holds size. For beginners, Baby Point (also known as Baby Bay) offers gentler waves nearby, and lessons are also given at Whiskey Point to the north. Further breaks include Pottuvil Point, a long right over sand and rocks, and Peanut Farm, Elephant Rock and Okanda to the south, mostly reached by tuk-tuk. The season runs from about May to October, when the south-west monsoon blows offshore on the east coast and swells wrap around the island. June to August are usually the most consistent months. From November to April, the east coast is mostly flat or onshore, and most surfers move to the south coast. Arugam Bay is a long way from Colombo, usually seven to nine hours by road via Ella or the hill country. Private drivers are the most common option, and some travellers combine the journey with a safari at Yala or Kumana National Park. The town suits surfers of every level who want a laid-back village atmosphere. Browse the surf schools and camps in Arugam Bay below.
