Whale Surf School teaches on Kata Beach on Phuket's west coast, one of the island's most popular spots for learning thanks to its sandy bottom and gentle beach-break waves during the south-west monsoon. The school is based on Patak Road in Karon and runs lessons from 8am to 5pm whenever there is swell.
Lessons last 90 minutes and are offered one-to-one or as a semi-private duo for two people, with an optional in-water photography upgrade. For a more structured start there is a 3-day, 2-night surf and stay package that combines a 6-hour beginner programme covering ocean safety, paddling and catching waves with accommodation at Tall Tree Kata, in either a private room or a shared dorm.
The Andaman surf season runs roughly from May to October, when Kata picks up regular swell. Whale suits complete beginners, returning surfers who want a refresher and children, as well as solo travellers who want to combine lessons with a social place to stay.
