Surf Go Where

Phuket

Phuket is Thailand's largest island and the centre of the country's surf scene. During the south-west monsoon, from about May to October, swell from the Andaman Sea reaches the island's west-facing beaches, producing small to medium beach breaks that are ideal for learning. Kata Beach is the main surf spot and the most consistent, with several schools, board rental stands and an annual surf contest. Kata Noi, just south, is a quieter bay that can be bigger. Kalim, near Patong, is a reef break that works on larger swells and suits more experienced surfers. Nai Harn, Surin, Kamala and Bang Tao also catch swell and offer alternatives when Kata is crowded. Waves are usually in the knee to head-high range, though stronger monsoon swells can bring bigger days. Mornings are generally cleaner before the onshore wind builds. Many beaches fly red flags during the monsoon, and rip currents can be strong, so it is worth surfing with a school or in front of lifeguards. Phuket International Airport is about 45 minutes to an hour from Kata by road. The monsoon season is low season for tourism in Phuket, so accommodation is cheaper and beaches are quieter, though rain showers are frequent. Phuket also has artificial wave pools for practice when the sea is flat. The island suits beginners, families and holidaymakers who want to try surfing.
