Khao Lak is a stretch of coast in Phang Nga province, north of Phuket, known for long beaches, national parks and a quieter pace than its neighbour. During the south-west monsoon from about May to October, its west-facing beaches catch swell from the Andaman Sea, and a small surf scene has grown up around Pakarang Cape.
The best known spot is Memories Beach, near the cape, a sandy beach break with gentle waves that suits beginners and longboarders. Nearby beaches such as Bang Niang and Khuk Khak also have waves on the right swell. Conditions are generally small to medium, with the most consistent surf from June to September. Mornings tend to be cleaner before the onshore wind picks up. As in Phuket, rip currents can be strong during the monsoon, and red flags are common, so beginners should stay with a school or surf instructor. Board rentals and lessons are available on the beach in season.
Khao Lak is about an hour and a quarter by road from Phuket International Airport, and many hotels arrange transfers. The area is also a base for liveaboard diving trips to the Similan and Surin Islands, though these mainly run in the dry season from October to May.
