Thailand is not usually thought of as a surf destination, but its Andaman coast on the west side of the country receives regular swell during the south-west monsoon from about May to October. The waves are generally small to medium beach breaks over sand, which makes Thailand a good place to learn, and the surf season runs during the low tourist season, when hotels are cheaper and beaches quieter.
Phuket has the most developed surf scene, with schools and board rentals at Kata Beach, Kata Noi, Kalim, Nai Harn, Surin and Bang Tao. Kata hosts an annual surf contest and is the most consistent spot on the island. North of Phuket, Khao Lak has quieter beaches around Pakarang Cape, including Memories Beach, which is the area's best known surf spot. Smaller and less consistent waves can be found on the Gulf of Thailand coast, such as Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, during the north-east monsoon around November to January, but the Andaman coast is the main draw.
Phuket International Airport has direct flights from Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and other regional hubs. Khao Lak is around an hour and a quarter north by road. Thailand suits beginners, families and travellers who want to try surfing on a beach holiday. During the monsoon, rip currents are strong and red flags are common, so take lessons with an established school. Browse the regions below for surf schools and board hire.
