Surf Go Where

La Union

La Union is a province on the west coast of northern Luzon, and its town of San Juan has become the main place for Filipinos and visitors to learn to surf. The beach at Urbiztondo has a sandy bottom and a long, gentle wave that suits beginners and longboarders, with dozens of surf schools and board rental shops along the shore. The surf season runs from about October to March. Early in the season, typhoon swells from the South China Sea bring the biggest waves, while from November the north-east monsoon (Amihan) produces steady swell with winds that blow offshore on this west-facing coast. Peak months are usually October to February. From April to September the sea is often flat or small, though passing typhoons can bring short bursts of swell. Besides the main beach, Monaliza Point is a reef break for more experienced surfers, and the river mouth and other nearby beaches offer alternatives on bigger days. San Juan is around four to six hours by road from Manila, depending on traffic, with regular buses from Metro Manila. The town has a relaxed atmosphere, a growing café and bar scene, and accommodation ranging from simple surf hostels to boutique resorts. La Union suits beginners, longboarders and weekend visitors from Manila, and it is one of the most affordable places in Asia to take lessons. Browse the surf schools and camps in La Union below.
